#MakingFlexibleWork for Jessica

Jessica has worked part-time for almost four years so that she can have more quality time with her daughter. As a motivated and dedicated manager, Jess knows that working flexibly isn’t a barrier to a successful career at all, and in fact can be just the thing that enables you to come to work as your best self.

Hi Jess, can you tell us a bit about what you do at Admiral and how long you’ve worked here?

I currently work as a Claims People Manager in Claims People and Development, where I’m responsible for improving recruitment processes within Claims and ensuring we’re positioning ourselves as a great employer for prospective candidates. I work closely with many of the Claims departments, as well as Recruitment, to ensure we hit our proposed recruitment numbers every month. I’m also responsible for ensuring our onboarding processes are relevant, and most importantly, helpful for our new starters. I’ve worked at Admiral for almost 12 years, always in the Claims department, starting my career in 2011.

What’s your working pattern?

At the moment I work 36 hours a week over a four-day week, working Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 6am to 3.30pm.

Why did you choose this pattern? What does it allow you more time for?

My sole reason for being part time is so I’m available and present for my daughter. Working four days a week means I have a better work-life balance and I get to spend a fair amount of quality time with my daughter.

Was it an easy transition or were there any challenges?

I’ve been part time for almost four years. Originally, I started with 32 hours a week, but since we’ve started hybrid working, I’m able to log in earlier than I would in the office as I don’t have to factor in the commute. It’s allowed me more freedom to increase my hours while still maintaining a healthy and positive work-life balance. I didn’t find the transition difficult, nor did I feel it came with any challenges. My previous and current managers have always been really supportive and accommodating with my hours, which made balancing everything really easy for me and something that I’m so grateful for.

Do you find that your work has been impacted in any way?

Not at all! I’m a highly motivated person day to day so I always ensure my targets are met and my work stays at a good standard. I’ve always been a hard worker, so working slightly differently to the standard full-time pattern makes no difference on the quality of my work. In fact, the flexibility I have makes such a difference on my work-life balance and overall wellbeing, it has a positive impact on my work.
